This week Unicare Home Health Care received a cheque from the government of New Brunswick for the first allocation of pay equity funds to cover the hours worked by their agency’s home support workers between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2013.
“The immediate task at hand now is to contact all our eligible home support workers and distribute the funds appropriately,” says Lisa Williams, owner and manager of Unicare Home Health Care. “We’ve been working very hard since receiving the cheque on Wednesday to make sure all our eligible employees receive payment.”
In the 2012-2013 budget, the New Brunswick government committed 6.4 million dollars to address pay equity for a number of female dominated public sector groups as well as workers in the private sector such as child care workers, home support workers and workers in transition houses. Pay equity is equal pay for work of equal value. As a result, the fair hourly rate for Home Support Workers was determined to be $13.15.
To determine if an employee is eligible under this program, the fair hourly rate is compared to an employee’s actual hourly rate as of April 1, 2012. Regardless of any wage increase(s) received since April 1, 2012, if an employee earned less than the fair hourly rate, a pay inequity is said to exist and pay equity adjustment(s) are required to correct it.
Unicare Home Health Care has been providing home care services to the Miramichi and surrounding areas since March, 2008.
